George Strait Returns to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2013

Calling all rodeo fans! The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo — one of the biggest events of its kind in the country — has announced a killer line-up for 2013. In addition to the usual events, like calf scrambles, chuck wagons races, and of course the rodeo itself, Rodeo Houston is known for putting on some killer country music shows with the biggest names in the biz. Next year, one of the biggest of all, legendary country star George Strait, will make his first appearance at the festival since 2003.

Event organizers actually added an extra day to the rodeo schedule to make room for a concert-only event that will feature the ‘Here for a Good Time’ star, as well as Martina McBride and Randy Rogers Band together on the same day. The performance, scheduled in the Reliant Stadium on Sunday March 17, 2013 at 7PM CT (tentative), will be a full-length concert. Although no riding competitions will be held on that day, the carnival, shopping areas, livestock and horse show, food booths and other exhibits will be open to concert-goers.

George Strait has an ongoing 30-year history with the Houston Rodeo. It all started in 1983, when the scheduled Rodeo entertainer became ill, and Straight, who was then a newcomer to the music scene, jumped at the chance to fill in. In the years after his inaugural performance at the rodeo, the King of Country became a fixture at the event. He has played to more than 1 million Rodeo Houston fans and was inducted into the show’s Star Trail of Fame in 1996.

On March 3, 2002, Strait closed the show with the last Rodeo concert in the famed Astrodome with a record attendance of 68,266. In 2003, he opened the show as the first performer in the new Reliant Stadium.

Although Rodeo fans are dancing in their seats, anxious to get tickets for Straight’s performance, they’ll have to wait. Concert tickets don’t go on sale until January. In the meantime, you can check RodeoHouston.com, for more breaking details about the 21-day event.
