‘Foxcatcher’ Moves Out of Oscar Season Into 2014

FOXCATCHER
Sony Pictures Classics

A couple of hours ago the trailer for Bennett Miller‘s ‘Foxcatcherleaked online, and then was pulled. It seems there’s a good reason for that. The film, which stars Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, is nowhere near finished and the picture has been delayed from December 20 into 2014 so Miller can finish editing the film.

That’s the word from Deadline, and if the film is good it means that it won’t come out (no matter when it’s finished) until it can hit a festival before getting a wide release. Sundance seems unlikely, so the earliest we might catch it is the Cannes film festival. Otherwise it’s possible Sony Pictures Classics will hold off until Fall of 2014.

The other option is that the film isn’t coming together the way the makers (and studio) hoped for, and so it will be put out at some point in 2014 with the hopes that the star power will at least make it somewhat profitable. If that’s the case, it could come out in the early months of next year.

It’s also (as Deadline points out) now the third Oscar film in the last week to shuffle release dates. The Nicole Kidman film ‘Grace of Monaco’ got bumbed into 2014, while Martin Scorsese‘s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ may come out at the end of the year, or may get shuffled into next year as well. Which means the 2013 Oscar battlefield has changed dramatically.
