FOX’s ‘Gotham’ Adding Mr. Freeze to Its Villain Origins?

FOX Gotham Mr Freeze Batman Danny Cannon
FOX / DC Comics

We’re already a bit uncertain what to make of FOX’s ‘Gotham,’ retelling the story of the caped crusader and his greatest villains from a young Jim Gordon’s perspective, particularly as the pilot alone incorporates many of Batman’s famous foes. Now, in addition to the Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and more, we’ve learned that Mr. Freeze himself might be up for the ‘Gotham’ treatment sooner rather than later.

As part of a lengthy interview with HitFix, covering everything from the retro-look of the series to Elmo, pilot director Danny Cannon teased that one of the more interesting Batman rogues gallery members they’ve begun conversations over how to adapt is chilly villain Mr. Freeze, memorably brought to life by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1997′s ‘Batman and Robin.’

I have a big pitch with Bruno about the Mr. Freeze character, whose origins are uncertain. If I can win Geoff Johns over and if I can win Bruno over, then I look forward to the moment where that character can be realized.

FOX’s ‘Gotham’ will explore “the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the villains that made Gotham famous,” with its pilot focusing on Gordon’s investigation of the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The pilot was written and executive produced by Bruno Heller (‘The Mentalist’), along with Warner Bros. Television, and directed by ‘Judge Dredd’ helmer Cannon.

The new DC drama also stars Robin Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Gordon’s partner Detective Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, Victoria Cartagena and Andrew Stewart-Jones as Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen, ‘Burn Notice‘ star Zabryna Guevara as Gordon’s GCPD boss Captain Essen, and Erin Richards as Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean.

We have no doubt that ‘Gotham’ will devote a sizable amount of its plot to setting up the biggest of Bat-villains, but what say you? Would you want to see Danny Cannon’s take on Mr. Freeze sooner rather than later? What other ‘Gotham’ villains do you think should come out to play?
