TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – Members of the Twin Falls Fire Department are in mourning after one of their own was fatality wounded Wednesday morning.

“The department is obviously shaken to its core and trying to get through this the best that everyone can in their own way,” Fire Chief Ron Clark said. “Everyone here is in shock and mourning. It’s a loss to us and the whole community.”

Ryan Franklin, 34, succumbed to injuries sustained after he was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning while riding his bicycle on 2900 North just south of Kimberly.

According to Idaho State Police, 32-year-old Hollister resident Hollie Winnett was driving westbound on 2900 North when she struck Franklin while he was riding his bicycle westbound on the same road. Winnett left the scene of the crash, but returned later. She has since been arrested for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and felony leaving the scene of a fatality crash.

More troubling is that Franklin leaves behind a wife and four young children. Friends have stepped up to help the family financially, however, by organizing a memorial fund. The goal is to reach $20,000, and by late Wednesday afternoon more than half of that had been raised.

It won’t fill the void that Franklin’s passing leaves, but it’s a gesture from the community that the firefighter was a friend to many.

“He was an excellent firefighter,” Clark said, noting that Franklin joined the department in 2013. “He was a great father, he was great husband; he was a good human being – a good, decent person. …

"This is such a tragic accident for such a young man just getting a good start in life with his family and a new house. And then for it to end so abruptly is just devastating; it’s devastating to the entire city.”
