POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — The U.S. Department of Labor has filed a lawsuit against an eastern Idaho school district contending district officials retaliated against an employee for reporting asbestos cleanup concerns.

The Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/1CuQSHi) that the six-page lawsuit filed Monday against Idaho Falls School District No. 91 seeks lost wages and damages for Penny Weymiller.

The lawsuit says Weymiller in March 2011 in her duties as a safety and health engineer reported to supervisors that asbestos removal plans at C.E. Gayle Junior High School didn't meet federal regulations.

The lawsuit says the district retaliated against Weymiller and fired her in June 2011.

The lawsuit says the district violated the whistleblower provision of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.

School District Superintendent George Boland declined to comment to The Associated Press on Tuesday
