As part of its increasing efforts to promote an equal environment for gay users, Facebook added two new icons over the weekend which make it possible to declare same-sex marriage status.

At the same time, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes married his longtime partner Sean Eldridge on Saturday. Hughes was reportedly one of the first users to take advantage of the new icons.

According to GLAAD, this isn’t the first time that Facebook has signaled support for its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered users. In 2011, for example, the social media site added “In a Civil Union” and “In a Domestic Partnership” as possible options for user profiles.

Facebook also created the Network of Support in 2010 in conjunction with GLAAD, which aims to stop anti-gay bullying.
