The paranormal first-person shooter series is back and free-to-play in F.E.A.R. Online.

Aeria Games, based in Berlin, Germany, has announced it will be launching F.E.A.R. Online this October on Steam. This marks the newest entry in the series since the third title launched in 2011. F.E.A.R. Online will be an online, free-to-play first-person shooter where you play a member of the F.E.A.R. task force in the events leading up to Project Origin. Investigating the Armacham Technology Corporation's ghastly experiments, your team must go through 10 maps with up to four players teaming up to face both humans and phantasms alike who are ready to kill you around every turn.

"We are excited to introduce F.E.A.R. Online to millions of PC gamers with the launch on the Steam platform," said Dr. Pascal Zuta, CEO of Aeria Games. "Taking player feedback to heart, our team has redesigned elements of the game that are most important to players to deliver an experience that we hope will please the vast and dedicated fan base of the F.E.A.R. series."

F.E.A.R. Online will be free-to-play when it launches on PC via Steam on Oct. 17. The game's open beta will launch on Oct. 8. You can apply for the beta by signing up at the F.E.A.R. website.

We'll always remember F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin for having the sexiest ghost scene ever made that didn't involve Patrick Swayze making pottery.
