Why do we go to college? Answers may include getting a job or making our parents proud, but Dr. Matthew Sanders contends that the real reason should be to learn how to learn.

The College of Southern Idaho’s Eagle View Lecture Series invites all students and community members to hear the author of ‘Becoming a Learner’ at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free of charge.

Brian Dobbs, who chairs CSI’s Social Science Department, says students of all ages will benefit from hearing Dr. Sanders’ message, which helps people understand the bigger context of education. Dobbs says arrangements are being made for students from several area schools to attend the lecture in the hope that they can start becoming better learners right away and not wait until they go to college.

“The purpose of college is not the grade or the degree you get, but who you become,” says Sanders in a YouTube excerpt that can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zeg5J9Bfww.
