Why isn't a country superstar performing during halftime of the Super Bowl? It's a fair question, and one country fans have asked every year since Shania Twain took the stage in 2003. Surely there are stars big enough to draw the nation's interest, right? Taste of Country writer Billy Dukes argues that fans of Nashville's biggest names should actually be grateful for this missed opportunity.

It's been 20 years since country dominated a halftime show. The Rockin' Country Sunday show with Travis Tritt, the Judds, Clint Black and Tanya Tucker seems so long ago, and aside from Twain, a country star hasn't taken center stage since. An argument could be made that's a good thing. It's difficult to win on a stage, what with so many variables. Too much can go wrong, and too many viewers are looking to skewer the act.
