Education Talks Continue

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho School Board Association has agreed to place time limits on legislation designed to give school districts more leverage during contract talks with the teachers union. In two measures unveiled Monday — and others expected possibly on Tuesday — the ISBA is proposing one-year sunset clauses.

The limited shelf life would apply to proposals to reduce teacher salaries, teacher layoffs and master contract negotiations. ISBA Executive Director Karen Echeverria says the changes are byproducts of discussions with the Idaho Education Association. The ISBA has drawn flak for trying to resurrect elements of the Students Come First Laws struck down by voters last November.

The bills also call on the ISBA and IEA to analyze data on the effectiveness of the proposed reforms to help guide future long-term modifications.
