Ed Boon: Mortal Kombat Will Still Be Online After GameSpy Closes

Worried that you weren’t going to be able to hear “FINISH HIM!” against online opponents anymore? Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has officially set the record straight about GameSpy’s closure.

According to Polygon, NetherRealm Studios director and Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has announced that the 2011 Mortal Kombat title will still run online despite GameSpy (the game’s provider of online multiplayer and matchmaking middleware), shutting down.

GameSpy has provided multiplayer functionality to dozens of games across multiple consoles and devices and has announced that it will be shutting down on May 31. This means that every game it hosted online will no longer have online support and need to find alternative means of online support.

Luckily, Ed Boon knows when to scream “Fatality” and when to not. Boon has recently tweeted that “MK9 will continue to run online.”  Unfortunately, he didn’t mention any specific companies that will be hosting Mortal Kombat’s online servers or if there will be any significant downtime during the transition. Other games to be affected by GameSpy’s closure include the first Borderlands and a few Civilization games, but these titles have also been said to be transitioning over to Steamworks’ online hosting.
