EA’s Executive Apologizes for Frostbite Team’s Wii U April Fools’ Joke
The team behind the Frostbite 3 game engine may have ended up on the boss’ bad side.
Electronic Arts’ Chief Operations Manager Peter Moore has publicly apologized to Nintendo for an April Fools’ joke posted yesterday on the Frostbite game engine’s Twitter, according to CVG. Moore explains that the joke was done in poor taste without the knowledge or consent of anyone up EA’s chain of command and that his company, along with all of its subsidiaries and divisions, would still like to remain on amicable terms with the Big N, despite their relative lack of business together.
On Apr. 1, Frostbite’s official Twitter page tweeted comments which made fun of the technological state of Nintendo and the Wii U.
“Frostbite will power #HalfLife3, coming out summer 2014! #WiiU exclusive,” read one joking tweet. “Frostbite now runs on the #WiiU since it is the most powerful Gen4 platform, our renderer is now optimized for Mario and Zelda.” The posts were deleted just hours after they were published.
Moore has publicly apologized on his own personal Twitter page saying, “Our apologies to partners @NintendoAmerica & fan[s], @FrostbiteEngine’s poor attempt at April Fools not condoned by EA: unacceptable/stupid.”
The Frostbite 3 game engine was used for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Battlefield 4, Need for Speed: Rivals and the Xbox One version of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Frostbite 3 is also being used in development for the next major titles of the Star Wars: Battlefront, Mirror’s Edge and Mass Effect franchises.
We can expect to next see the Frostbite 3 engine in action in Dragon Age: Inquisition by the end of the year. Last year, DICE openly stated that the Wii U system was unable to support the Frostbite 3 engine.
