IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho woman has been charged with elder abuse after prosecutors say she stole money and medications from her 87-year-old grandmother and left the older woman without food.

Idaho Falls Police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said 30-year-old Lyndsey Sue Whitney was arrested on a warrant earlier this week. Hansen said police sought the warrant after the older woman, who lived with Whitney, told relatives that she was being exploited by her granddaughter.

The relatives called Adult Protective Services, which investigated and notified police. Whitney is scheduled for a court hearing on June 19. She has not yet entered a plea. Elder abuse is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
