ROBERTS, Idaho (AP) — Officials in the southeast Idaho town of Roberts have removed three lighted crosses from the water tower following a complaint by a resident. KIFI-TV reports in a story on Tuesday that the crosses have been replaced by three American flags.

Resident Joe Cohea lives near the water tower and complained to city officials and also notified the American Civil Liberties Union. He says he believes no religious symbols belong on city property. He says the city contains many different faiths and cultures.

Mayor Robert “B.J.” Berlin says the city welcomes religious and cultural expression, and that the city hasn’t changed its policies. Cohea says that if a nativity scene appears again this year at a city park he’ll contact the ACLU.
