Do You Know How Old Dorothy Custer is?

I think we can all agree that we are proud to have Dorothy in our community. She is an amazing lady who has: zip-lined the canyon, jumped off the Perrine Bridge and has played harmonica for Jay Leno!

Yesterday, May 29th, Dorothy Custer celebrated her 103rd Birthday. If you have never meet Dorothy you should try and track her down at Western Days to wish her a Happy Birthday. Dorothy will be serving as the Grand Marshall of Western Days this Year.

Dorothy’s family helped to settle the Magic Valley. She spent her youth climbing tall trees, going to school on horseback, and riding around and around in the inside of moving wagon wheels.

As a young woman, she attended the College of Idaho, tumbled as a gymnast, and taught 6th and 7th grades in the Murtaugh School District.

She married her husband, Marvin, in 1937. Together they raised four children just outside of Twin Falls. After their children were grown, Dorothy and Marvin kept active in the Good Sam RV club, volunteering with the Red Cross, and snowmobiling in the South Hills. She combined her excellent sewing and acting talents to create a dozen entertaining, funny, and unusual characters, including Pecos Bill, Gentleman Joe, and her most famous character, Granny Clampett. She played her harmonica, danced, and sang her way into hearts around the valley.

When she was 90, Marvin suggested she should stop doing the splits because she’d hurt herself.

Shortly after her 100th birthday, she was invited onto 'The Tonight Show,' where she cracked up Jay Leno with her joke about a brand new hat and her harmonica playing skills. Dorothy was an overnight sensation! Six months later, Jay invited her back as his Valentine sweetheart, and her fame only grew.

For her 102nd birthday, Dorothy became the oldest person ever to complete a tandem BASE jump, soaring down from the Perrine Bridge. Shortly after that, she took two elephant rides and just last week, she flew in a hot air balloon.

She has raised, loved, entertained, and inspired four generations of family, friends, and fans. Happy Birthday Dorothy!
