It used to be rare that I would meet a married couple that didn't have the same last name.  And I'm not sure that I've ever ran into a couple where they guy adopted his wife's last name.  But I have noticed some new trends popping up.

I know of one couple who took both of their names and now share a hyphenated last name... and I know of three couples (myself included) who don't share last names with their spouse.

Reasons vary.  We are a blended family and my wife didn't want anyone to be singled out by having the only different last name in the house.   I support that decision to this day.  Some of my friends kept their names for professional reasons.

For whatever reason, what used to be unheard of, is now a bit more common.  What do you think?  Do we lose that "something special" by not sharing a last name?
