Disney has canceled its upcoming spiritual successor to the Nintendo 64 classic, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

According to GameSpot, Disney has announced on Star Wars: Attack Squadrons' website that development on the game has been canceled. Disney announced the game just five months ago and it was intended to be a free-to-play game on PC. Squadrons was originally going to let you engage in aerial dogfights as an X-Wing or TIE Interceptor. Attack Squadrons' website has changed and now only shows the following message:

"We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons. After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences. We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta."

Star Wars: Attack Squadrons was going to be the debut title of development studio Area 52 Games. Area 52 has yet to announce its next project or talk about its current relationship with Disney post-cancellation.
