Declo Man Rescued After Sliding Down Ice Face on Borah Peak

MACKAY, Idaho (AP) — A 57-year-old south-central Idaho man who slid 300 feet down an ice slope while climbing Idaho's highest peak has been rescued.

KIFI-TV reports that Kent Blau of Declo slid on the ice on 12,667-foot Borah Peak on Sunday afternoon before stopping at a shale slide below. Officials say Blau wasn't seriously injured but couldn't climb out on his own so Custer County Search and Rescue and a helicopter responded.

Officials say rescue teams reached Blau but it was too dangerous to fly out with night approaching and smoke from wildfires limiting visibility. Officials say rescue teams spent the night with Blau on the mountain and safely returned him to his family at about 9:30 a.m. Monday.
