Detroit-born singer-songwriter David Shelby is debuting the music video for his song “Back to Us” exclusively for readers of The Boot.

Sportscaster Kristen Beat plays the love interest in Shelby’s "Back to Us" video, shot in Shelby Township and Macomb Township, Mich. Both the song and the clip focus on a relationship that’s gone a little off the rails.

“Lately, we ain’t been ourselves / Caught up in the world around us / Holding on by a thread,” sings Shelby in "Back to Us." “We need a little 'pick love up' kind of moment / To pull us off the edge / A little time, do what we do best / To get right back to us.”

The "Back to Us" music video's setting makes sense for Shelby, who has melded the sounds of Detroit and Nashville to create what he calls “Rust Belt country.” He describes his style as “the heart of America, built on hope and tenacity for the future,” which seems like a decidedly apt moniker considering the optimism in this track.

“I really am a product of my upbringing," Shelby admits. "We’ve [Detroit] suffered a life-threatening and paralyzing heart attack, rebuilt and restructured, and we’re a community that has learned to live and thrive ... and have a soft spot in our big industrial heart for country music."

A proficient accordion, trumpet, piano and guitar player, Shelby holds a degree in jazz and has toured with artists such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Turtles and Stevie Wonder. “Back to Us” is one of six songs that appear on Shelby’s newest EP, titled Boy Wonder, which is available for download via iTunes.
