TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)- The College of Southern Idaho says it is making changes to make sure it's students are successful as they begin classes.

CSI announced two new changes taking effect this year that will require all new students to take what is called Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) and get applications in early.

Every full time, new college student will need to take the six hour SOAR course. It covers resources available to students, rules and procedures, and keeping track of financial aid. It also covers student life and things to do around campus and the community. Student's will have eight sessions in May to sign up for at the cost of $25 that covers lunch and all the materials.

SOAR sessions will be held in Twin Falls, Hailey, Burley, and Idaho Falls. The other policy change is the deadline to submit applications. Up to now, the college accepted applications on the last day of registration. For the summer students can submit applications up to may 30 and in the fall August 15.

“For too long, we have concentrated on simply getting students to enroll,” said CSI Admissions Director Gail Schull. “Too often, our new students have been quickly overwhelmed by all the new tools, requirements, and processes of being college students and they would drop out. Research shows that students who participate in orientation programs and who don’t wait until the last minute to apply and register are far more likely to be successful and complete their degrees.”
