Taylor Swift's summer boyfriend Conor Kennedy was arrested outside the White House on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 13). The 18-year-old was detained along with his father and 46 others as they protested to bring attention to the issue of climate change and the construction of a controversial oil pipeline.

According to Newsday, the group handcuffed themselves to the White House gate to protest the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Conor's father, an environmental lawyer) said he was released after about five hours and fined $100 for failure to obey a lawful order to disperse.

"The Capitol Police were amazing. They were courteous and kind and they got us out pretty quick," he explains.

Actress Daryl Hannah was also amongst those arrested. The group was demanding that President Obama reject permits to build the pipeline. A decision is expected to be made soon.

Conor Kennedy is a high school senior at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. He and Swift dated last summer and things seemed to be getting serious, as they spent a lot of time together -- even meeting each other's families -- and Kennedy family matriarch Ethel said she adores the pop-country singer.

The pair broke up in October and Swift went on to find romance in One Direction's Harry Styles, until they split shortly after the new year.
