BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The College of Idaho is trying to ban an app named after the 1950s novelty song, "Yakety Yak," due to students reporting cases of harassment.

The Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/1L6R7uE ) that the college's Student Senate passed a resolution to make the school a Yik Yak-free zone after seven students reported being personally threated on the app.

The app, Yik Yak, uses GPS to create a hyper-local chat room and lets users share their thoughts with people around them while remaining anonymous.

But, some students who defended anonymity and free speech have questioned the school's ban.

The app makers have disabled the app around high schools and middle schools in response to bullying. President Marv Henberg says they haven't responded to the college's request to disable it on their campus.
