CASSIA COUNTY, Idaho (KLIX) The Minidoka Ranger District will begin pile burning in the Sublett area during the end of October. The Sawtooth National Forest office announced that will recent cooler and wet weather crews will start burning 1,200 acres of hand-piles October 19.

The public is asked to watch for signs telling them where the fires will be in the area.  Drivers are also asked to keep an eye out for workers near or on the roadways. Some of the first areas for burn activity are the Hartley Peak area along Forest Service Road #578 south towards the Sublett Guard Station along Forest Service Road #565.   However, please remember, pile units exist across the Sublett Division and other areas (North and South Hegler Roads) will be impacted as work progresses.

For public and firefighter safety we ask that Forest users be cautious on roadways and avoid active burn areas. Smoke may impact visibility on road systems even after fire crews have left for the day, so slower speeds and extra caution is recommended. Pile burning can continue into the winter, so expect to see smoke even after the roads have been groomed for over-snow vehicles.

Anyone with concerns about the burning can contact the Minidoka Ranger District Fuels Planner at 208-678-0430.
