SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 10-year-old boy is dead after authorities say he was shot accidentally during a family hunting outing in Cache County.

The Cache County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday about a mile southeast of Red Spur. Deputies say the boy was sitting on the floorboard of a four-wheeler when a hunting companion pulled alongside the vehicle. They say the man got off his four-wheeler and was removing his rifle when it went off, hitting the boy. A medical flight crew pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office says his body was transported back to Cache Valley. Chief Deputy Matt Bilodeau says there are no charges pending. He says the boy's name is being withheld until family and friends can be notified.
