Could we see the halfway point between the first two Borderlands appear on next-gen consoles before the inevitable Borderlands 3 does? Gearbox teases at the possibility.

Total Xbox reports that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel could be coming next-gen consoles. In an interview with Gamereactor TV, Gearbox Software franchise director Matt Armstrong and 2K Australia CEO Tony Lawrence both agreed that a next-gen version of The Pre-Sequel is definitely possible, but its current-gen release takes priority.

“I guess we’re full on developing the PS3, 360 and PC game, and we believe in that too,” Lawrence said. “All the Borderlands 2 players are playing on those consoles. That’s the choice they’ve got. So we want to reward those guys. If fans say ‘hey, we’d really like this on a next-gen console’, well, we’ll think about that, but right now we’re concentrating on the consoles we know.”

Armstrong mentioned to Gamereactor that moving the Borderlands story to a new console wouldn’t be fair to fans who have played the first two titles on current-gen systems. While many franchises have simply moved onto next-gen consoles, Gearbox’s franchise director said its about staying true to the fans.

“The other thing is it’s the middle game in a trilogy,” Armstrong said. “Moving it on to next-gen and requiring people to buy new hardware to play the middle entry in a trilogy feels a little disingenuous and we sort of want to respect that.”

Gearbox may have not wanted what is considered “Borderlands 1.5″ to be released on next-gen consoles before Borderlands 3 did.

“As we said, one day maybe, I don’t know,” Armstrong said. “We’ll think about that, see how people react to the game, how much fun they have and whether or not everyone moves on to the next gen fully next year. For now we’re pretty happy with our choice and I think people are going to be to.”

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on Oct. 17.
