BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A 22-year-old Boise man has been sentenced to six months to a year in the Ada County jail and 10 years of probation for accidentally shooting and killing a friend last spring. The Idaho Statesman reports 4th District Judge Patrick Owen called the death of 23-year-old Gary Arlen Jr. reckless and tragic when he sentenced Gregory Shain on Friday. Shain had earlier pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Court records said Shain told police he thought he was pointing an unloaded gun at his friend when he shot and killed him last March. Defense attorney Mark Manweiler has noted that Shain made sure to unload the gun before he and Arlen were handling it and dry firing it that night and that Arlen reloaded the gun without Shain's knowledge.
