BOISE, Idaho (KTVB) -- The City of Boise has put the brakes on Uber once again. Uber regional spokesman Bryce Bennett said the company has given tens of thousands of free rides while trying to work things out with the city.

However, Mayor Bieter said an interim agreement is insufficient. They want more protections for the city and more comprehensive background checks on drivers. The shared ride company has an interim agreement in Spokane, but Boise City Council rejected the agreement presented tonight. Instead, the city has chosen to work towards a permanent ordinance instead.

City Council President Maryanne Jordan said it is a poor agreement, has bad language, and does not protect the city should something happen to a rider. One taxi driver said the fact that Uber has not been charging for rides has hurt his business. He said his rides are down by about 40 percent. The council's decision allows Uber to continue operating for free in Boise. The City Council plans to have an ordinance work session for Uber on February 24th to develop a permanent solution.
