The BlazBlue franchise is taking a page from the Hearthstone manual with BlazBlue Battle Cards, coming to iOS devices very soon.

The game is being developed by Alliance Digital Media and published by Aksys Games, as Aksys announced over the weekend at AnimeExpo.

The game will let players choose between one of twelve characters, each with a deck of attacks and special moves, and fight them against the A.I. and other players online. Six of the characters will come with the initial download, but the other six can be purchased within the app.

Our instinct tells us that this won't work and it'll be just another iOS game, but Hearthstone has taught us that card games based on established game franchises can be a lot of fun, so we're going to call ourselves cautiously optimistic about this one. We do like that BlazBlue will see a release this year, even though Aksys is reviving the Guilty Gear franchise with Xrd Sign this fall.

Seeing this does make us wonder what other games would make great digital card games. We'd play a Skyrim card game for hours on end, and an Assassin's Creed card game with all of the Assassins and Templars from the entire franchise would be way to good to pass up. Maybe more games should try the Hearthstone thing.

BlazBlue Battle Cards is slated for a Fall 2014 release.
