Gaming's favorite muscled amphibians, the Battletoads, pick a fight with Shovel Knight as Microsoft teases their formal return.

According to IGN, the head of ID@Xbox, Chris Charla, hinted that Battletoads could be making a return during GDC 2015's recent Windows 10 event. Microsoft also revealed that the retro-esque indie hit, Shovel Knight, would be making its Xbox One debut via the ID@Xbox program. To celebrate its jump to the Big M, Yacht Club Games released a new trailer for Shovel Knight, foreshadowing their iron-clad hero taking on Rash, Zitz and Pimple and heralding the trio's long-awaited return to gaming. While it's not the reboot or new title that we were hoping for, it's still nice to see Battletoads appear in a modern game. Shovel Knight's old school-style makes it one of the most opportune places for the boys to make their return to gaming since Super Battletoads's limited arcade release in 1994.

"I wonder when we'll see them next?" Charla cryptically teased during the Windows 10 presentation.

There have been multiple hints that have occurred over the past few months indicating that we could be seeing some sort of new Battletoads project. A couple months ago, Xbox head Phil Spencer wore a Battletoads t-shirt during a major Windows 10 event (as opposed to the suits and polo shirts everyone else wore during the presentation). In November, we reported that Microsoft filed a trademark for Battletoads, but refused to comment on its actions.

Here's to hoping Rash, Zitz and Pimple make their current-gen, standalone debut soon.
