RENO, Nev. (AP) — Backers of a plan to force the federal government to turn over control of millions of acres of land to Nevada are gearing up for new efforts in Congress and hoped-for support from incoming Republican President Donald Trump.

They want to convince a skeptical public that state control of nearly 7.3 million acres currently under the U.S. Bureau of Land Management wouldn't disrupt hunting and off-highway riding — or stick taxpayers with big bills for fighting wildfires. Republican state Sen. Pete Goicoechea supports the effort, but concedes that if it were put before voters today, it would fail.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/2hnOsGZ) the most detailed plan is a former bill in Congress sponsored by Nevada Republican Mark Amodei. It died in recent weeks. But Amodei says he'll try again.
