In their now annual hardware events, Apple announced the new 'iPhone 5' today from the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. If you had been following the rumor mill on sites like Gizmodo, The Verge, and Engadget, they thought they had a pretty good idea of what Apple's new iPhone was going to look like.

Turns out they nailed it exactly.

What's New

The iPhone 5 features an all-new aluminum, two tone body, and glass screen. I think the iPhone 4 and 4S are amazing, but I'm so happy to get rid of the glass back. Available in black and white, the new iPhone retains some of the design features from its predecessor, but makes it look fresh and new. I actually really like the look of the 5.

The iPhone 5 features a display that's four inches tall, but no wider than the current generation. This was to keep the phone comfortable to hold, but give you more screen real estate, and making the device perfect for watching widescreen movies. It's Retina HD, and current apps that have not been optimized for the new display ratio (16:9) will appear "letter boxed" with black bars on the top and bottom.

The iPhone 5 will be powered by Apples new flagship processor, the A6. Apple claims the A6 is two times faster than the current iPhone 4S both in CPU and graphics. In real life, they claim it loads web pages 2.1 times as fast.

Features Rundown

  • LTE Connectivity
  • Upgraded battery life
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • 802.11N Wi-Fi
  • New dock connector

What Does It Cost?

The Good news is that Apple kept the prices exactly where they've been for the past few years. The iPhone 5 16GB is $199, the 32GB is $299 and the 64GB is $399, all with a two year contract.

The Interesting news is that the iPhone 4S is now only $99, and the iPhone 4 is FREE with a two year contract. The iPhone 4/4S are both amazing phones that will get iOS 6 when released next week. There's no reason not to get one of these phones.
