AMC’s ‘Low Winter Sun’ Officially Canceled

AMC Low Winter Sun Canceled
AMC

If you’ve been saving your perfect “‘Low Winter Sun‘ has set” joke for the right moment, the time is now. AMC has officially confirmed that the low-rated and oft-maligned detective drama starring Mark Strong and Lennie James will not return for a second season.

AMC’s hesitation to announce the series’ fate so long after airing its first finale had seemed to spell out its end, though recently we’d heard from AMC executives that a growing audience through different forms of media could potentially save ‘Low Winter Sun’ from the scrap pile. The network declined to offer any comment on the matter, save for confirming the drama’s cancellation.

For those unfamiliar, ‘Low Winter Sun’ was adapted from a 2006 UK miniseries (also featuring Mark Strong) and written and executive produced by Chris Mundy (‘Criminal Minds’). The AMC drama offered a contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption that started with the murder of a cop by Detroit detective Frank Agnew, and also starred Lennie James (‘The Walking Dead’), James Ransone, Ruben Santiago-Hudson (‘Castle‘), Sprague Grayden (’24′) and Athena Karkanis (‘The Transporter’).

The premiere drew a modest 2.5 million viewers but dwindled to the hundreds of thousands by the finale. Series star James Ransone took to criticizing the series after its initial end, though his character’s death likely would have shielded him from any of the fallout.

We had thought ‘Hell on Wheelssurprise renewal could mean a similar success for ‘Low Winter Sun,’ but what say you? Are you disappointed the AMC drama won’t live to see a second season? Might Netflix pick it up, as with its salvation ofThe Killing‘?
