WEST VALLEY, Utah (AP) — A West Valley City woman has been cited for reckless endangerment after her 9-year-old boy rode his bike alone along the freeway in the middle of the night. A concerned citizen spotted the boy and picked him up along I-215 about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The Desert News reports the boy was unable to give his name or address because of a speech impediment and spent the weekend in protective custody while police located his mother, 25-year-old Reyna Perez. Police Sgt. Jason Hauer says she was cited on Tuesday for the Class B misdemeanor because she waited about 18 hours to report her son missing.

He says the boy is being returned to his mother because a hearing held on Tuesday didn't turn up any other concerns about his care.
