POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho sheriff says eight police officers fired 65 to 75 rounds and that three of the bullets struck and killed a Pocatello man during a standoff in January.

The Idaho State Journal reports that Bannock County Sheriff Lorin Nielsen held a news conference Friday to discuss the findings of the Twin Falls County prosecutor’s office that announced Wednesday the shooting of Boede Paul was justified. Officials say Paul called the sheriff’s office on Jan. 16 and confessed to killing his girlfriend, Angelea Schultz, and showed officers the construction site where she was buried.

Paul then pulled a pistol on detectives and led them back to his house. A six-hour standoff ended when Paul got out of his pickup truck and fired shots at SWAT officers, who returned fire.
