60 Flappy Bird Clones Debut on App Store Every Day
Those looking for a title to fill up the absence left by Flappy Bird’s removal from the App Store should know that there are hundreds of similar titles being developed trying to ride the original’s coattail to success.
According to Pocket Gamer, an average of 60 Flappy Bird clones are added to the App Store every day. This equates to to 2.5 Flappy Bird copycats appearing on the App Store every hour, which is similar to one Flappy Bird rip off being released every 24 minutes. Dong Nguyen may have pulled Flappy Bird from the App Store last month, but hundreds upon hundreds of imitators have tried to earn their share of the spotlight now that the original title is gone.
These Flappy Bird copycats include any game where you must guide a falling, airborne character through a side-scrolling, endless runner’s obstacle course comprised of vertical objects that you must safely navigate through without touching.
Some of these copycat games involve the same mechanics of the original, but with a gimmick that is meant to inspire people to continue playing. Some of these gimmicky variations of Flappy Bird have used Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West and even Dong Nguyen’s face as stand-ins for the yellow bird. If there is a game on the App Store with the word “flap” in it that was made over the past month, you can safely assume it was one of these knockoff titles.
The irony with this overabundance of Flappy Bird clones is that the original title itself appears to be heavily inspired by Piou Piou, a very similar looking game which was released back in 2011.
