BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An archaeological dig led by University of Idaho in Boise has unearthed 100-year-old remains of downtown Boise's River Street neighborhood just north of the Boise River.

The Idaho Statesman reports students, professors and volunteers have taken part in the project and have discovered animal bones, marbles, shoe leather, ceramic shards, a cherry pitter and the remains of what may be the oldest Basque racket court in town. The items help show the history of the neighborhood that was closely associated with the city's African-American community.

Much of the dig is taking place surrounding the 108-year-old Hayman House, which was sold to Capital City Development Corp. in 2009. The dig site is open to the public and includes interviews with former residents. The project will continue through July 3.
